Man Remanded For Stealing Electrical Cable Worth Millions

A Lagos court has ordered the detention of a 40-year-old man in a correctional facility after he admitted to breaking into a residence and stealing electrical cable valued at approximately ₦3 million (about £1,500).

The Chief Magistrate of the Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Mr B.A. Sonuga, gave the remand order on Monday following the guilty plea of the accused, Seun Olakunle. The court scheduled a hearing on 17 July to review the case facts before passing sentence.

According to police prosecutor ASP Aminu Isaac, the incident occurred on the morning of 19 June at a residential address on Aliqoda Street in the Oreyo area of Ikorodu. The stolen property reportedly belonged to Mr Olawale Abimbola.

The prosecution stated that the defendant’s actions violated several provisions of the Lagos State Criminal Law, including Sections 307(2), 339, and 287. Under Section 287, theft is punishable by up to three years’ imprisonment.

The case highlights ongoing concerns over property crime in parts of Nigeria’s commercial capital, where infrastructure theft remains a challenge for local residents.
