Malawi Battles Growing Mpox Outbreak With Lilongwe At The Epicentre

The mpox outbreak in Malawi continues to spread, with the capital Lilongwe reporting the highest number of cases, according to new figures from the Public Health Institute of Malawi (PHIM).

Since the first case was identified on April 17, the country has confirmed 128 infections, of which 104 were detected in Lilongwe. On Monday, health officials confirmed two new cases in girls aged nine and eleven, both with no travel history outside the country.

So far, one fatality linked to mpox has been reported. Ten districts have recorded cases, underlining the nationwide reach of the outbreak.

Authorities say they are intensifying their response through enhanced surveillance, treatment support, and community education.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that spreads through close human contact. While generally less severe than smallpox, it can cause serious illness, particularly in vulnerable groups such as children.
