The 444th Combat Brigade, one of the key military units aligned with Libya’s UN-recognised Government of National Unity, has come under attack in the town of Bani Walid.
According to a statement released by the brigade, a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle outside its headquarters on Tuesday. Images published online showed the aftermath of the blast, though the unit stressed that “the situation is under control” and that it remained operational.
The attack highlights Libya’s fragile security environment amid deep political divisions. Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has remained split between the Tripoli-based GNU and an eastern administration allied with Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army.
