The Osun House of Assembly, on Tuesday, proposed N100,000 fine to be imposed on any hospital which fails to report cases of gunshot victims to the police.
The assembly made the preposition during deliberation by the Committee of the Whole on a bill titled “Osun State Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gun Shot Bill 2025”.
Mr Adewale Egbedun, the Speaker of the House and Committee Chairman, stated that the bill provides that any person arriving in a hospital with gunshot wounds must be reported to the police within two hours.
Egbedun said that though the bill sought to ensure that gunshot victims received immediate treatment, but such incidents must be investigated by the police within reasonable time.
He said thay any doctor convicted of treating gunshot victim(s), not reported to the police, was equally liable to a fine of N100,000 or six months imprisonment or both.
Previously, when reading the policy thrust of the bill, Mr Adewunmi Adeyemi, representing Obokun Constituency, said the bill was a way of domesticating the compulsory treatment of gunshot victims passed by the Senate.
The assembly then adjourned sitting to Tuesday April 22 (NAN)
