Lawmakers Extend Capital Budget Deadline Amid Growing Concerns Over Project Delays

Nigeria’s Senate has granted an extension for the implementation of capital expenditures in the 2024 national budget, shifting the deadline from 30 June to 31 December 2025 to allow for the completion of critical infrastructure and public service projects.

The bill amending the 2024 Appropriation Act was passed during Tuesday’s plenary session after being read and approved in three swift stages. The proposal, brought forward by Senator Solomon Adeola, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, was backed overwhelmingly by fellow legislators.

Adeola explained that the delay in project execution had made the extension essential, noting that many MDAs had yet to exhaust the budgetary allocations released to them.

“Large sums have been disbursed, but implementation remains incomplete. We must avoid a repeat of the widespread abandonment of government projects,” he told the chamber.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session, formalised the approval of the measure after adopting the committee’s report.

However, some senators raised concerns over potential liquidity issues within the federal government. Senator Yahaya Abdullahi pointed out that contractors and workers were complaining about non-payment, despite claims of capital releases.

“This is troubling. We must meet with the President and understand what is truly happening,” he said.

Senator Abdul Ningi added that clarity was needed from the Appropriations Committee on whether revenue shortfalls were affecting implementation.

While expressing support for the extension, Senator Seriake Dickson lamented the ongoing uncertainty, stating: “It is necessary to keep government functioning, but the current state of affairs is not sustainable.”

In closing, Deputy Senate President Barau defended President Tinubu’s commitment to national development and assured senators of the executive’s responsiveness.

“President Tinubu is dedicated to Nigeria’s progress. When concerns are presented to him, especially those concerning national welfare, he takes action,” Barau affirmed.
