Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s former Minister of Information and Culture, has paid an emotional tribute to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a mentor, pillar of support and father figure whose death is a deeply personal loss.
In a statement released on Monday from Abuja, Mohammed reflected on Buhari’s leadership and humanity, praising his steadfast character and compassionate spirit.
“Many have rightly described him as a patriot, a man of integrity, incorruptible and humble,” Mohammed said. “Yet for me, he was also someone who embodied kindness and genuine concern for those around him.”
Mohammed, who served as the government’s spokesperson for nearly eight years, shared that Buhari frequently asked after his well-being despite the weight of presidential responsibilities.
“The bond and trust we shared helped me through the toughest moments. In his eyes, I could do no wrong—and that support meant the world,” he added.
Their relationship endured beyond their time in office, Mohammed noted, recalling his last visit to Buhari in Daura, where he spent three nights, and a final meeting in Kaduna during Ramadan.
“Despite being advised he did not usually receive visitors that day, he made time for me, and we spent hours together. I didn’t realise it would be our last meeting,” he shared.
Mohammed explained that when Buhari fell ill and travelled to London, he stayed in contact through the president’s aides, while also praying for his recovery.
“It was truly an honour to have worked so closely with him. May Almighty God forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus, and bring comfort to his family and to all Nigerians who mourn this loss,” he concluded.
