Traffic on Lagos’s 3rd Mainland Bridge returned to normal on Monday after police dispersed protesters angered by demolitions in the Oworonshoki area.
According to police spokesperson DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the demonstrators had blocked the Iyana Oworo section of the bridge, one of the city’s busiest routes, trapping commuters — including reports of patients in need of urgent medical attention.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh personally engaged with the crowd but, after appeals failed, authorised the use of “minimal force” to reopen the route. Barricades were dismantled, and order was restored without casualties.
The command said it remains neutral and committed to protecting lives and property. It urged residents to pursue lawful avenues for expressing grievances.
