Lagos Charity Backs Hundreds Of Vulnerable Families With New Year-Long Support Scheme

A Lagos-based non-profit organisation, the Agbelebu Foundation, has launched an ambitious welfare programme aimed at transforming the lives of vulnerable households by offering them structured, year-long support.

The Family Adoption Project, unveiled on Sunday, begins with 500 families and is expected to double its reach as the initiative expands. Founder Oluwagbenga Abiola, a former senior official of Agege Local Government, said the project stemmed from a long-held commitment to address the everyday struggles faced by low-income families.

Abiola said many households continue to grapple with unmet needs that often go unnoticed, adding that welfare must be approached as a sustained responsibility rather than a seasonal act of generosity. The new scheme, he explained, will prioritise healthcare, education, empowerment and financial stability.

The project targets a broad spectrum of vulnerable groups, including older people, children, widows, young people, persons living with disabilities and low-income earners. Working with partner institutions, the foundation intends to provide skills training, medical checks, food support, scholarships and insurance plans.

Agege Local Government Chairman, AbdulGaniyu Obasa, described the initiative as an important effort to fill welfare gaps at the grassroots. Traditional leader Oba Oladimeji Egbeyemi of Ogba echoed this view, praising the impact of community-driven interventions in complementing government programmes.

At the launch event, 500 food boxes were distributed, while 100 persons with disabilities received health insurance support through Ilera Eko. More than 200 older residents and people with disabilities were also offered free medical screening and immediate treatment.

Recipients, including the Chairperson of the Association of Persons Living with Disability in Agege, Mrs Sekinat Abolaji, expressed appreciation for the foundation’s outreach.
