Lagos, Borno, Imo And Ogun Governors Push For Modernisation And Investment In Nigeria’s Aviation Sector

Governors from Lagos, Borno, Imo, and Ogun states have called for greater investment and reforms in Nigeria’s aviation sector, emphasising global standards, competitiveness, and connectivity as critical to economic growth.

The remarks came during the third Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) National Aviation Conference (FNAC) on Monday, which convened aviation stakeholders to address sector challenges and plan for future development.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who hosted the event, said the country’s aviation sector must move from discussions to coordinated execution. “The aviation industry is about connectivity, convenience, and competitiveness. We must ensure investors can reach our markets, cargo moves efficiently, and tourism thrives,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu cited Lagos as a living example of aviation success and challenges. The state hosts Murtala Muhammed International Airport, one of Africa’s busiest, which faces congestion due to growing passenger and cargo demand. He outlined the state’s integrated transport strategy, including Blue, Red, and Green Line rail projects, designed to support over 20 million residents and millions of business visitors.

He reaffirmed commitment to the Lekki-Epe International Airport, a PPP initiative approved by the federal government, which will accommodate the A380 and serve five million passengers annually. “This airport is designed to support the Lekki industrial corridor, including the Dangote Refinery, Deep Sea Port, and Free Trade Zone. We invite investors to partner with us,” he said.

Borno Governor Babagana Umara Zulum said the soon-to-open Maiduguri International Airport will enhance the North-East’s economic prospects and promote cross-border trade, leveraging the state’s borders with five neighbouring countries.

Imo Governor Hope Uzodinma described FNAC as a crucial forum for strengthening partnerships and noted that aviation is central to the state’s economic strategy. He emphasised the need to expand night-flight operations, adhere to global best practices, and ensure seamless market access for investors.

Ogun State, represented by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, applauded FAAN for organising the conference and highlighted the upcoming commercial operations at Ogun Gateway Airport as an opportunity to attract investment and boost regional development.
