The leadership of Nigeria’s Labour Party, under Senator Nenadi Usman, has called for unity and adherence to the rule of law after recent comments by Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed appeared to reignite internal leadership tensions.
Speaking at an event earlier this week and again on a national television broadcast, the party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate reportedly identified Julius Abure as the party’s national chairman—despite a Supreme Court ruling overturning his claim to the position.
In a statement released in Abuja, Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser to Senator Usman, reiterated that the party’s leadership was legally affirmed by the Supreme Court decision delivered on 4 April.
“The judgment clearly set aside all previous court recognitions of Barrister Abure’s chairmanship,” the statement said. “It is legally binding, and all party members are expected to comply.”
While the party welcomed Baba-Ahmed’s expressed commitment to reconciliation, it urged that such initiatives must be based on established legal facts and party unity.
“With congresses and a national convention approaching, the Labour Party must focus on internal cohesion and its role as a credible opposition,” the statement added.
The Usman-led faction encouraged members to remain calm, reaffirming its commitment to reconciliation efforts that respect constitutional boundaries.
