A powerful rainstorm has damaged several schools and staff residences across the Funtua zone in Nigeria’s north-western Katsina State, according to a government statement released on Tuesday.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa, expressed deep concern over the incident, which she said caused extensive structural damage to school buildings and staff quarters in multiple locations.
Speaking through the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Malam Sani Danjuma, Musa-Musawa offered condolences and pledged government assistance.
“We are deeply sympathetic to the schools, staff, and families affected by this unfortunate event,” she said. “We ask for divine mercy on those impacted and promise that the ministry will stand with them as they recover.”
The commissioner called on school administrators to ensure classes continue as scheduled despite the disruption, urging them to maintain a strong focus on academic progress and student welfare.
An evaluation of the full extent of the damage is underway, and the ministry has promised further announcements on rehabilitation efforts in the coming days.
The disaster highlights the vulnerability of educational infrastructure in rural regions of Nigeria, which often lack the resilience needed to withstand extreme weather conditions.
