A breakaway group from the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State has signalled plans to align with a new political platform aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general elections.
Alhaji Mustapha Inuwa, former Secretary to the State Government and a one-time APC gubernatorial contender, revealed the group’s strategy during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Katsina on Sunday. He emphasised that the move seeks to challenge APC dominance both at state and national levels ahead of the 2027 polls.
“We are engaging with key political actors across the country to build a strong, credible and unified front that can effectively rival the APC,” Inuwa said, noting that a formal decision on the new platform is expected by the end of June.
He stressed that the meeting served to brief supporters on current developments and the necessity of forging a new path. He also urged patience and unity among followers, calling on all progressive-minded Nigerians—regardless of current party affiliation—to join the initiative.
“Once the national leadership finalises the plan, we will return here and implement it locally based on the framework provided,” he added.
Addressing concerns over defections to the APC, Inuwa dismissed them as misguided, comparing the shift to “leaving the frying pan only to land in the fire.” He argued that both the PDP and APC are mired in similar internal disputes, especially evident during party congresses.
He also criticised the conduct of recent local elections in Katsina, accusing the ruling party of restricting access to nomination forms to its preferred candidates—an act he claimed undermines fair competition.
Despite these challenges, Inuwa expressed confidence in public backing. “The electorate remains our greatest asset. They are with us, and we are with them. With divine support, we are optimistic about success,” he concluded.
