Katsina Moves To Adopt National School Safety Policy

The Katsina State Government has begun the process of domesticating the National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence-Free Schools (NPSSVFS), aimed at protecting children and teachers from attacks.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa, confirmed the move on Monday in Katsina while receiving the policy document. The announcement coincided with preparations for the sixth International Day to Protect Education from Attack, to be marked globally on 9 September.

The initiative is being supported by Save the Children International, GoalPrime Nigeria, and the Education Cannot Wait First Emergency Response project.

Musa-Musawa said insecurity in Nigeria’s north-west had severely disrupted schooling. She outlined ongoing measures under Governor Dikko Radda, including improved school infrastructure, teacher training, security coordination, and psychosocial support for children.

The commissioner noted that 30 Master Trainers had already been prepared to strengthen community awareness and early warning systems. She urged traditional leaders, parents, security agencies and partners to work together to safeguard education.
