The Kano State Police Command has launched an investigation into Sunday’s violent altercation between followers of two rival traditional leaders: the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The incident, which took place at Emir Sanusi’s palace in Kofar Kudu, led to multiple injuries and the destruction of property, including police patrol vans.
Speaking on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori confirmed that an eight-member committee was established on Monday to examine the circumstances behind the unrest. The committee has been tasked to deliver its report within a week.
The commissioner made the announcement while receiving the new leadership of the Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) during a courtesy call.
CP Bakori emphasised the importance of partnership with the media, pledging continued collaboration to promote effective community policing and ensure stability in Kano.
In his remarks, Mr Murtala Adewale, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, said the visit aimed to build on the existing relationship between journalists and the police.
