Kano Cleric Denies Blasphemy Allegation, Says Remarks Misinterpreted

Islamic scholar Sheikh Lawan Shuaibu Abubakar has denied allegations of blasphemy over his recent public comments on Islamic traditions related to Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Speaking before the Kano State Shura Council, the cleric — popularly known as Malam Abubakar Lawan Triumph — said his statements had been taken out of context and misinterpreted by critics.

He explained that some people had edited and circulated parts of his sermon on social media in a manner that could incite the public.

“I believe in the Prophet and his teachings. I believe he is our saviour,” he said. “Those who misunderstood my teachings should please seek the full clips and forgive me. It was not intentional.”

The allegations against the cleric stemmed from remarks perceived by some as disrespectful to the Prophet’s physical attributes, birth, and parents — sparking concern among religious leaders and civil society groups in the state, where religious sensitivities often run high.

Chairman of the Kano State Shura Council, Malam Sa’ad Gidado, urged Sheikh Abubakar to promote peace and unity through his teachings.

“You have a divine responsibility to teach the truth in accordance with the Prophet’s teachings. Avoid statements that could cause division within the Muslim community,” Gidado advised.

Other scholars present also cautioned the cleric to be more mindful of his words and consider the potential impact of his sermons on the wider community.

The council is expected to issue recommendations aimed at promoting peace and religious harmony in the state.
