The Association of Resident Doctors at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Kaduna, has threatened to begin an indefinite strike if the state government fails to meet its outstanding salary obligations within 12 days.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, the chapter president, Dr Josiah Yakubu, said the doctors were demanding full enforcement of the revised 2024 Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and payment of two months’ arrears.
He noted that despite signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the government, the agreement had yet to be honoured, leading to frustration among doctors. “Failure to implement the demands before the end of August will leave us with no option but to down tools,” Yakubu said.
The association highlighted rising staff shortages as doctors leave for better-paying positions in federal institutions and neighbouring states. It also called for more recruitment and improved welfare to retain young medical professionals completing their housemanship.
Yakubu said the group would continue to coordinate with the Nigerian Medical Association and the National Association of Resident Doctors to press for improved working conditions.
