JUST IN: PDP’s New Chair Vows to “End Impunity” in Party Overhaul

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammad, has vowed to end “impunity, manipulation, or disregard” for the constitution of the party.

He stated this on Friday, at the inauguration of the party’s new Board of Trustees, at the official residence of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, describing the event as “a symbol of rebirth,” and the beginning of a new era of transparency and accountability within the party.

Muhammad, who was formerly the National Vice Chairman (North Central), assumed office following the suspension of the former National Chairman of the PDP by a faction led by the party’s Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, who suspended the National Chairman, Amb Umar Damagum, announcing Muhammad as acting Chairman in his stead.

In his address on Friday, Muhammad stated that the party had lost its moral balance due to years of internal disunity and disregard for court orders, noting that, “For too long, impunity became culture, and internal democracy became an afterthought. But today, we have reached the point of renewal.”

He further called for introspection and unity, stating that the party’s rot “did not start yesterday,” but began when zoning principles were ignored ahead of the 2015 elections.

“Today marks a significant turning point in the life of the Peoples Democratic Party. We have come together, not merely to inaugurate a new Board of Trustees, but to renew our faith in the ideals that gave birth to this great political family – justice, fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law.

“To the new members of the BoT, this is not a reward for loyalty; it is a sacred trust. The responsibility before you is enormous, to speak truth to power, to defend justice, and to ensure that the PDP remains a home for all Nigerians,” he said.

The Chairman then entered a closed-door meeting with other members of the party, including the former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, PDP National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu, and former Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Mao Ohuabunwa.
