Kano State has officially designated Thursday, 26 June 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic calendar year 1447 AH.
The declaration was contained in a statement issued by Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf extended his warm greetings to Muslims throughout the state as they welcome the new year, which begins with the sacred month of Muharram.
He encouraged citizens to take the opportunity to reflect on the past year, renew their spiritual commitments, and offer prayers for peace, unity, and progress in both Kano State and the country at large.
“This is a time to renew our values of tolerance, solidarity and prayerfulness,” the governor said, urging residents to come together in peace and reflection.
The Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah, commemorates the Prophet Muhammad’s historic migration to Medina, a pivotal event in Islamic history.
The public holiday allows Muslims in the state to engage in religious activities and community gatherings that highlight the significance of the Islamic calendar.
