INEC Reports Surge In Voter Registration As 4.4m Nigerians Sign Up Online

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has recorded more than 4.4 million online registrations and over half a million in-person registrations since the launch of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise last month.

Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, said in a statement on Monday that the online pre-registration exercise, which began on 18 August, had attracted 4,445,505 applicants as of 14 September.

Women accounted for a slight majority at 51.8 per cent, while 65.8 per cent of registrants were young people aged 18–34. Students made up a quarter of those who signed up.

So far, 509,929 people have completed both the online and physical stages of the process, with young voters again dominating the figures at 74.1 per cent.

Olumekun said the commission has published a detailed breakdown of the statistics by state and demographic group on its website. He also confirmed that online registration in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) closed on 15 September, with in-person registration to follow at designated centres before being devolved to all 62 wards between 29 September and 8 October.
