Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a nationwide voter registration exercise aimed at including citizens who have recently turned 18 in the country’s democratic process.
Dr Law Mefor, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, announced the initiative during a press briefing on Wednesday in Awka, describing it as a vital opportunity for young people to participate in the upcoming 8 November governorship election.
“This effort shows INEC’s dedication to deepening democratic values and ensuring that young adults can help shape the state’s future through their votes,” Mefor said.
The ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise started on Tuesday, 8 July and is scheduled to conclude on 17 July. It enables newly eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Mefor also noted that the exercise covers citizens who have relocated to Anambra and wish to transfer their voter registration, along with those needing replacements for lost or defaced voter cards.
He appealed to eligible residents to make use of the registration window, warning against multiple registrations and emphasising the importance of supporting INEC’s goal to conduct free, fair and transparent elections.
“This is a crucial step to ensure our democracy remains inclusive and truly represents the will of the people,” he added.
