Igbinedion’s Son, Michael, 54 Others, Initiated Into Elders’ Council In Okada

Barr Michael Igbinedion, son of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, has been inducted into the Edion (Elders’ Council) of Okada, Ovia North East, Edo, alongside his brothers.

The Edion is the council from which the Odionwere, head of the community, is chosen, based on seniority and cultural traditions passed down through generations in Okada.

Igbinedion, Chairman of Wantan Group, GHPP Konsult, GO H2O Water, and Serendip Oil & Gas, is known for promoting Edo traditions.

Dressed in white traditional attire, he and other inductees underwent rites, after which the current Odionwere formally pronounced them members of the Edion council.

Speaking at the event, Pa Samson Idehen, the Odionwere of Okada, confirmed that 54 others were initiated along with Michael Igbinedion.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that inductees were grouped according to age, with the Ighokhae (28–30) and Ighele (30–55) categories also recognised.

The Benin society regards age grades as key institutions, organising individuals within specific brackets for shared duties, leadership grooming, and cultural preservation.

The Edion initiation marked a return of the revered tradition to Okada, a ceremony not held in nearly three decades, according to pa Idehen.

” By tradition, Michael Igbinedion is now eligible to become Odionwere in future, when chosen by seniority and approved by customary rites.

He said joining the Edion was an honour reserved for respected individuals with integrity and community service records.

He emphasised that the Elders’ Council safeguards tradition, mentoring younger generations, and transmitting ancestral wisdom and community values to ensure continuity.

“Michael Igbinedion’s initiation reflects his maturity and contributions to Okada’s progress through leadership, philanthropy, and upholding communal values across different spheres of life.

“To complete the rites, initiate visited prominent residents, including the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion symbolizes respect and blessing, ” he added.

Pa Idehen praised the Esama for being a cultural icon and lauded his efforts in sustaining and reviving the age-grade institution in Okada.

Responding, Michael Igbenedion thanked the elders of the community for considering him worthy of initiation into the Elders Council.

He noted that the initiation marked a milestone in the journey of his life, adding that the position had placed on him a huge responsibility of promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom.

He promised to join hands with the elders of the community to preserve the aged long tradition and custom of the people.(NAN)
