The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is set to deepen collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to strengthen data security and combat corruption nationwide.
ICPC spokesperson Demola Bakare said in a statement on Monday that the initiative was discussed during a courtesy visit by NDPC National Commissioner and CEO, Dr Vincent Olatunji, to ICPC Chairman Dr Musa Aliyu, SAN, in Abuja.
Represented by the Commission’s Secretary, Mr Clifford Oparaodu, Aliyu said the partnership would enforce the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 and close loopholes exploited for fraud, identity theft, and corruption in public and private institutions.
He described safeguarding data as “a frontline weapon in the war against corruption,” adding that the joint approach would enhance public trust, prevent insider abuse, and align Nigeria’s governance with international transparency standards.
Olatunji called the collaboration a “critical enforcement tool,” noting it would focus on intelligence sharing on corruption-related data breaches, joint awareness campaigns, and standardised data management protocols for ministries, agencies, and the private sector.
The partnership follows ICPC’s recent capacity-building workshop for its Data Protection and Incident Response Team, aimed at improving data handling and breach response. Both agencies plan to formalise the agreement through a Memorandum of Understanding in the coming weeks.
