Heavy Rainfall Forecast Prompts Flood Alert In Northern Nigeria

Authorities in Nigeria have placed 15 northern states on red alert for potential flooding, warning residents to prepare for severe weather between 10 and 14 August 2025.

The Federal Ministry of Environment, via its National Flood Early Warning Centre, said forecasts indicate heavy rainfall that could trigger floods in Adamawa, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Taraba, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Sokoto, Borno and Kwara.

Several major towns are also at risk, including Jimeta, Mubi, Keffi, Kafanchan, Birnin Kebbi, Minna, Gusau and Sokoto. Kebbi State tops the list, with 10 towns flagged, among them Kamba, Kangiwa, Kalgo, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, Gwandu and Jega.

Malam Usman Abdullahi Bokani, who heads the ministry’s Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, urged communities and local authorities to act immediately to safeguard lives and assets. He also called for prompt communication from stakeholders to ensure a rapid, coordinated emergency response.

Last month, the ministry issued a similar alert to 11 states, underscoring concerns over increasingly frequent and severe flooding events linked to seasonal rainfall patterns.
