Guardiola Hands City Captaincy To Silva In Power Shift Amid Exit Speculation

Pep Guardiola has taken the unprecedented step of personally appointing Bernardo Silva as Manchester City’s new captain, signalling a shake-up in the club’s leadership as the new season approaches.

Guardiola, who traditionally allows the squad to vote for their skipper, said he acted due to dissatisfaction with the dressing room dynamics during the previous campaign. Alongside Silva, Rúben Dias, Rodri, and Erling Haaland have been named as vice-captains.

The announcement adds intrigue to Silva’s future, as the midfielder has made clear he may not renew his current contract, which expires in 2026. The 30-year-old has long been linked with a return to Benfica, the Portuguese club where he began his career.

“I’ve made my decision about the future, but now isn’t the time to discuss it,” said Silva. “Right now, I’m focused on City. There’s one year left on my contract, and although I’ve had chances to leave, I’ve chosen to stay this time.”

Guardiola explained his unorthodox choice, stating: “This season, I’ve taken control of the captaincy decisions. Last year, I saw things I didn’t like. I’ve picked the four leaders myself. We might add one or two more after the Club World Cup.”

Silva’s appointment replaces Kyle Walker, who was handed the armband last year but departed for AC Milan on loan in January. Though the Italian club opted not to make the move permanent, Walker has not been reinstated in the City squad for international duty.

Meanwhile, Erling Haaland’s elevation to vice-captain marks a significant step in his leadership journey. Guardiola commented, “Haaland has the future here. It’s important he starts learning the responsibilities that come with being a leader. One day, he’ll wear the armband full-time.”
