Governor Fintiri Mourns 23 Flood Victims In Adamawa, Orders Damage Assessment

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of 23 lives following a devastating flood that swept through parts of Adamawa State on Sunday.

The flood, triggered by a torrential downpour around 1:00 a.m., caused widespread destruction and displaced several residents, with properties worth millions of naira reportedly lost.

Upon arriving in the state, Governor Fintiri visited the affected areas and temporary shelter at Aliyu Mustafa College, Yola, where he commiserated with survivors and families of the victims. Visibly shaken by the extent of the devastation, he described the incident as “tragic and overwhelming.”

“We will constitute a technical committee to carry out a thorough assessment in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) and the **National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),” Fintiri said. “From there, we will take the necessary steps.”

The Governor assured victims of government support in rebuilding and possible relocation, while also condemning the spread of misinformation by individuals seeking to politicize the disaster.

He attributed the primary causes of the flooding to heavy rainfall and blocked water channels and drainage systems, which hindered runoff from draining into nearby rivers.

Governor Fintiri was accompanied during the inspection by his Deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta; Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley; Secretary to the State Government, Awwal Tukur; and other senior government officials.

The worst-affected communities include Shagari, Yolde-Pate, and Tashan Sani, where emergency responders are still working to assist displaced residents.
