The Germany’s state-owned railway boss, Deutsche Bahn, which has been plagued by chronic delays and unhappy passengers in recent years, switched to travel by car and aeroplane.
He has done this for several business trips last year, the Transport Ministry said on Wednesday.
Richard Lutz, the chief executive of Deutsche Bahn, travelled by car on seven business trips in 2023 and flew three times, the ministry said in response to a parliamentary enquiry.
The enquiry was by the centre-right opposition Christian Democrats (CDU).
Deutsche Bahn said executives at the railway generally rode the train for work travel in 2023, but occasional exceptions were made, including during disruptive labour strikes by railway unions.
The railway said that Lutz also chose other modes of transport for travel abroad or when the business trips “was not compatible with a train journey’’ because of scheduling.
It was an effort to avoid overnight accommodation away from home. (dpa/NAN)
