Five communities in Sokoto’s Sabon Birni Local Government Area have been submerged by floods from the River Rima, leaving residents stranded and key roads impassable.
Lawmakers on Wednesday pressed for urgent action after Al-Mustapha Aminu (APC–Sabon Birni North) told the House that the downpour had displaced families and severed the Goronyo–Sabon Birni road at Gajit and Zalla Bango.
“This disruption has not only affected daily activities but has also hampered emergency response and supply routes,” Aminu said, urging government agencies to divert floodwaters and send relief to affected villages, including Makuwana, Dangawo, Faru Kumbula, Infaruna and Magajin Dawaki.
During the same session, the Assembly also backed a motion to expand facilities at Amanawa Infectious Diseases Hospital. Lawmakers said the centre, with a long history in the state, required new wards, toilets, furniture, and an access road to meet growing healthcare needs.
Deputy Speaker Kabiru Ibrahim (APC–Kware) presided over the session, where both motions were unanimously adopted.
