First Lady Urges Stronger Action As Nigeria Targets Tuberculosis Elimination By 2030

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for renewed efforts to combat tuberculosis (TB), reaffirming the Federal Government’s goal of ending the disease in Nigeria by 2030.

Speaking in Abuja to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day 2026, Tinubu underscored the need for sustained political commitment and collaboration among stakeholders to accelerate progress.

Marking the global event under the theme “Yes! We Can End Tuberculosis”, she described the campaign as a rallying call for governments, communities, health workers and development partners to intensify their response.

While noting that tuberculosis is both preventable and curable, the First Lady expressed concern that it continues to impact many households. She acknowledged recent gains in reducing infection rates but warned that significant challenges persist.

Tinubu urged increased investment in healthcare, expanded screening and early diagnosis, improved treatment access, and stronger public awareness campaigns to tackle stigma associated with the disease.

She expressed optimism that with continued leadership under President Bola Tinubu and coordinated support from partners, Nigeria can meet its target of eliminating tuberculosis within the next decade.

The First Lady emphasised that collective responsibility and sustained action remain key to achieving a TB-free Nigeria by 2030.
