The Minister of Transport, Sai’du Alkali, has announced that the Federal Government has completed 135 road projects across Northern Nigeria as part of efforts to enhance the transportation of goods and people and stimulate the regional economy.
Alkali disclosed this on Wednesday in Kaduna during a presentation on infrastructure at a two-day Interactive Session on Government-Citizens’ Engagement, organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation.
The event, themed “Accessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizens’ Engagement for National Unity,” brought together key government stakeholders and citizens to discuss infrastructure and national development.
According to the minister, 216 additional road construction projects are currently ongoing in the region. He also revealed that 312 road maintenance projects have been completed, while 50 others remain in progress.
“Several legacy projects cutting across states are underway,” Alkali said.
“These include the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, Calabar–Abuja Superhighway, and the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe Road.”
In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) alone, 14 road projects have been completed and commissioned, the minister noted.
Other completed infrastructure projects in the FCT include the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network Project, the construction and rehabilitation of numerous primary and secondary schools, and the commissioning of three modern bus terminals.
“President Bola Tinubu has also approved the construction of mega bus terminals in each of the six geopolitical zones of the country,” Alkali added.
He further stated that several other road construction, rehabilitation, and expansion initiatives are underway nationwide under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Alkali also disclosed that the Federal Government has secured financing for the full Aba–Maiduguri corridor, which spans Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Plateau, Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Benue States.
Additionally, the government has rehabilitated the old Lagos–Kano Narrow Gauge railway, and freight services have resumed between Apapa Port and the Kano Inland Dry Port.
