Female Suicide Bomber Claims 24 Lives in Borno Attack

At least 24 people have been confirmed dead, and numerous others injured, following a suicide bombing by a female terrorist in the town of Konduga, situated around 36 kilometres from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that the attack took place at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Friday, 20th June 2025, when the suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a popular food venue where a large crowd had gathered to purchase meals.

According to police sources who spoke to Zagazola Makama, the devastating blast killed 24 individuals instantly, comprising both men and women, while an unspecified number of others suffered various injuries. The attacker’s body was obliterated by the explosion, with only her head being recovered at the scene.

In the wake of the attack, a joint security team, including personnel from the Military, Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) units, Tactical Teams, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters, quickly responded to secure the area.

The entire vicinity was cordoned off and searched thoroughly for any additional explosives, but no further devices were found. Authorities have since managed to restore order to the area.

Injured individuals were swiftly evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for medical care. The bodies of the deceased were also taken to the hospital mortuary, where medical staff confirmed the deaths.

Efforts are currently being made to identify and profile the victims, with arrangements underway to release the bodies to their families for burial in line with religious practices.

Meanwhile, security has been intensified across Konduga and its neighbouring areas to avert any further attacks.
