Encourages Other Teaching Hospitals to Follow Suit
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to providing adequate healthcare to Nigerians through infrastructure development, as part of his Renewed Hope Agenda for the current administration.
Tinubu made this statement during the commissioning of ten distinct projects at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada (UATH) in Abuja on Thursday, where he was represented by the Coordinating Minister of Health, Professor Ali Pate.
He praised Chief Medical Director, Professor Bisala Ahmed Ekele, for promoting and expanding the scope of the Renewed Hope Agenda in the health sector through collaboration among state, federal, local governments, and the private sector.
Professor Pate stated that the federal government has revamped and reformed primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare services in the country to address emerging health challenges.
“President Tinubu is enhancing the health sector by establishing teaching hospitals and providing specialised centres to address ailments requiring government intervention,” he added.
Earlier, Chief Medical Director Professor Ekele described May as a significant month for the health institution, particularly regarding its establishment and other transitions.
He noted that over the past twelve months, approximately ten infrastructure projects have been initiated and completed by the hospital management, which includes professional, academic, and proficiency activities for the staff.
While promising to sustain the success story of the past eight years since 2007, Ekele urged the government to continue investing in the hospital, particularly given its location.
He appealed to the President, through the Minister, for the establishment of a solar farm at the hospital to mitigate the challenges of power supply.
Furthermore, the new Chairman of the Board of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Dr Ikechukwu Odikpe, reiterated the necessity for a solar farm for the university teaching hospital, stating that he had already approached the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) regarding the request.
The highlight of the occasion was the commissioning of the ten projects, represented by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Development, Professor Ali Pate.
The major infrastructure renovations and commissions include male surgical and medical/family planning units, an intensive care unit, an assisted reproductive construction unit, two staff quarters (50-room capacity for senior staff and 50-room capacity for junior staff), and the CT scan department, among others.
