Abuja will soon host a state-of-the-art multi-event sports centre, following the groundbreaking ceremony performed on Monday by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Located at Kafe District, Life Camp, the project is being executed by Tegwa Nigeria Limited and is expected to be delivered in June 2026. It will include basketball, football, volleyball, tennis, squash, and table tennis courts, serving as a hub for youth talent development, local employment, and international competitions.
Wike described sports as both a tool for national development and a viable source of revenue, citing Brazil’s global football industry as a model. He said the project aligns with President Tinubu’s agenda of empowering young people and creating sustainable jobs.
The minister announced that the facility will be run through a public-private partnership arrangement to avoid mismanagement. “The government will not run it. We will partner with the private sector to keep it sustainable,” he said.
The contractor, Engr. Peter Otegwa, hailed Wike’s vision and assured that the company would deliver a world-class facility, pledging to employ local labour and ensure technology transfer.
The FCT Administration said similar projects would be rolled out across area councils from 2026.
