Dr Kayode Fayemi, former Governor of Ekiti State and ex-Minister of Mines and Steel Development, has mourned the death of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a resilient leader with a profound belief in the nation’s future.
In a statement on Monday, Fayemi extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large, calling for collective prayers and reflection during this time of mourning.
“President Buhari’s story is one of perseverance,” Fayemi said. “He faced repeated electoral defeats yet never wavered in his commitment to democratic governance. His eventual victories in 2015 and 2019 underscored both his tenacity and the faith Nigerians placed in him.”
Highlighting Buhari’s legacy, Fayemi noted the transformative infrastructure projects undertaken during his administration, including nationwide road construction, rail system upgrades, and the long-awaited Second Niger Bridge.
“He was committed to laying foundations for future generations, and these projects remain as lasting reminders of that vision,” Fayemi added.
As former chairman of the APC Presidential Primary Convention in 2014, Fayemi also reflected on the complex challenges Buhari encountered while in office, from economic turbulence to persistent security threats.
“Though often misunderstood, he was fundamentally driven by patriotism and a desire to see Nigeria prosper,” Fayemi remarked. “In time, history will offer a fairer assessment of his sacrifices and intentions.”
Fayemi concluded by urging Nigerians to continue Buhari’s work: “The late president has finished his race. It is now our duty to build on what he started and strive towards the Nigeria he dreamed of. May his soul rest in peace, and may God grant his family and our nation strength in this period of grief.”
