The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Monday unveiled its contactless payment system at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, with projections to triple revenue generation.
Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, represented by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire, said the “Operation Go Cashless” initiative would strengthen the authority’s non-aeronautical revenue assurance and ensure transparency.
According to her, the cashless system would cut reliance on physical cash, making every transaction traceable and secure, while positioning Nigeria’s airports in line with global standards.
“By embracing digital trends, we are sending a clear message to the world that Nigeria is open for business, with infrastructure that meets international benchmarks,” Kuku said.
She added that trained brand ambassadors had been deployed at airport gates and terminals to guide users, provide demonstrations, and resolve inquiries.
The FAAN Go Cashless Card, already available at access gates in Lagos and Abuja, can be collected, activated, and funded immediately by airport users.
Effective Sept. 29, physical cash payments will be gradually phased out across FAAN’s revenue points, including access gates, car parks, and VIP lounges, ahead of full elimination by the first quarter of 2026.
Kuku stressed that after the Lagos and Abuja rollout, the policy would be expanded nationwide in phases. She also credited the support of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), for the initiative, developed in partnership with Paystack.
FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Joy Agunbiade, projected a 50 per cent rise in revenue collection from the pilot stage, with expectations of reaching 75 per cent as more payment points are integrated.
“Our ultimate goal is to triple revenue within the first year of full implementation. These additional funds will be reinvested into infrastructure development across Nigerian airports,” Agunbiade said.
Also speaking, Mr. Fisayo Kolawole, Director of Commercial at Paystack, described FAAN’s cashless system as the largest contactless payment deployment in Nigeria, developed over 10 months to ensure safety and efficiency.
“This is a leap forward that sets the standard for aviation in Africa and modernises how millions of airport users make payments,” Kolawole said.
The launch event featured a live demonstration of the onboarding process, including how to purchase and fund the Go Cashless Card.
