Ex-JAMB Registrar And Anti-Graft Agency Pursue Settlement In Multi-Billion Naira Fraud Case

Former Nigerian exams board chief, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have begun discussions to settle a high-profile N5.2 billion corruption case outside of court.

During a session at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Ojerinde’s counsel, Eteya Ogana, informed Justice Obiora Egwuatu that both parties were considering an “administrative settlement” following recent interventions. “We shall be asking for a long date after vacation to enable us report same,” Ogana requested.

Backing the request, ICPC counsel Lesie Iheduru said the prosecution was supportive of the ongoing reconciliation process. “Talks are ongoing on the reconciliation move,” he noted.

Justice Egwuatu agreed to adjourn proceedings to 20 October, when the court will be updated on whether a settlement has been reached or if the defence will proceed with its case.

Professor Ojerinde, who previously headed both JAMB and the National Examinations Council (NECO), has been on trial since July 2021 after pleading not guilty to an 18-count charge of corruption and fraud. The ICPC accuses him of diverting funds amounting to N5.2 billion for personal benefit, in violation of anti-corruption and fraud laws.

In June, the court rejected Ojerinde’s application for dismissal, ruling that evidence presented by ICPC witnesses was sufficient to require the former registrar to enter his defence. The prosecution maintains that it has substantiated the charges, including abuse of office and fraudulent enrichment.

This latest attempt to resolve the matter follows an earlier plea bargain effort initiated by Ojerinde in February 2022, which ultimately collapsed.

The case, which has attracted significant public attention in Nigeria, is set to return to court in October when an update on the potential settlement will be provided.
