The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has commended Governor Peter Mbah for significantly improving doctors’ welfare in Enugu State and said it would not join the strike declared by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
At a press briefing marking Physicians’ Week 2025 and the Enugu South-East Regional Health Summit, the state NMA Chairman, Dr Sunday Okafor, described Mbah’s administration as one of the most doctor-friendly in the country.
“Doctors in Enugu are among the best paid in Nigeria,” Okafor said. “The governor’s reforms have enhanced efficiency across the public health system, so we cannot disrupt services where leadership is working.”
He called on the Federal Government to swiftly address the concerns of resident doctors to prevent prolonged disruptions in patient care nationwide.
Okafor also lauded Mbah’s investments in healthcare infrastructure, noting the ongoing development of 260 fully operational Type Two Primary Health Centres across Enugu’s electoral wards.
He urged other governors to follow Enugu’s example by creating welfare-driven systems that motivate healthcare professionals and improve service delivery.
Speaking on the theme “Healthcare as a Value Chain – Building Efficiency from Policy to Patients,” Okafor said the forthcoming regional summit would provide a platform for stakeholders in the South-East to share strategies for strengthening health systems and reducing inequalities.
