End Of An Era: Nigeria Bids Farewell To The Awujale Of Ijebuland

Nigeria is mourning the passing of one of its most esteemed traditional rulers, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who died on Sunday, 13th July 2025, aged 91.

His passing came on the same day as former President Muhammadu Buhari, prompting Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to call it a day of “double sadness” for the nation.

Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960 at just 26 years old, beginning a reign that spanned over six decades. Widely regarded as a champion of cultural heritage and modernisation, his leadership helped transform Ijebuland into a symbol of progress within Ogun State.

Governor Abiodun, in a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, reflected on the monarch’s remarkable legacy.

“Throughout his reign, he was a beacon of unity, cultural preservation, and progressive development,” the governor said.
“His dedication to education, healthcare, and economic growth strengthened not only Ijebuland but Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.”

President Bola Tinubu, who described the news as “double pain in [his] heart,” praised Oba Adetona for his steadfast commitment to national unity and as a “towering natural ruler” who guided Ijebuland through decades of change.

“He served his people with dignity, panache, class, and an unmistakable sense of duty,” Tinubu remarked.
“In over six decades on the throne, he was an advocate for progress and national unity.”

Tinubu recalled his personal bond with the monarch, calling him “an honest arbiter, confidante, and reliable leader,” whose wisdom and candour shaped many national conversations.

Among his enduring contributions, Oba Adetona established the School of Postgraduate and Research Studies in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University—a legacy Tinubu said would continue to influence future generations.

As Nigerians reflect on a life dedicated to service, President Tinubu and Governor Abiodun extended condolences to the royal family, the government and people of Ogun State, and all sons and daughters of Ijebuland.

“May our departed Kabiyesi find eternal rest,” Tinubu concluded, “and may we honour his memory by upholding the values he championed.”
