Nasir El-Rufai, former Governor of Kaduna State, has reaffirmed his determination to help consolidate Nigeria’s opposition figures under a single political party, describing the effort as a personal mission to help reverse what he called the “damage” inflicted by the current administration.
Speaking on the sidelines of a political meeting, El-Rufai revealed that the growing coalition includes figures such as Peter Obi of the Labour Party and former ministers from previous governments. While each remains affiliated with their respective parties, there is a shared commitment to merge under a common platform when the time is right.
“The consensus is clear: we remain where we are for now, but once a viable party platform is identified, we will all move together,” he said. El-Rufai, now a member of the SDP, added, “I will do everything I can to ensure this unification happens.”
Distancing the initiative from past political realignments, El-Rufai said the coalition differs from the 2013 formation of the APC. “This is not about parties; it is about individuals—people like Atiku’s group, Peter Obi’s group, and others—coming together. If we succeed in agreeing on a platform, we will all leave our parties to join it,” he said.
Despite the high-profile figures involved, El-Rufai dismissed speculation around political ambitions. “None of us is chasing positions. This is not the time for ambition; it’s about saving the country,” he said.
