EFCC Releases Tambuwal, Rejects Claims Of Political Bias

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, after detaining him on Monday over alleged fraudulent withdrawals totalling N189 billion during his tenure.

A source in the EFCC said Tambuwal was granted administrative bail on Tuesday and would be allowed to leave the commission’s headquarters after fulfilling his bail conditions.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for accusing it of politicising corruption investigations. In a statement signed by spokesperson Dele Oyewale, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede described the allegations as “self-serving, diversionary, narrow and idle,” insisting the commission operates without interference.

Olukoyede said the EFCC had investigated both current and former governors and ministers from the ruling party, and it was wrong to condemn similar probes involving opposition figures.

“If I am not condemned for investigating ruling party governors and ministers, I should not be condemned for also investigating opposition leaders,” he stated.

The EFCC boss added that all corruption allegations, whether old or new, deserved investigation, stressing that there is “no constraint of time and season in criminal investigations.”
