EFCC Issues Wanted Notice For Former Abia Commissioner Amid Local Government Funds Probe

Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has declared former Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Christopher Enweremadu, and an associate, Fortune Ozoemela, wanted on charges including conspiracy, money laundering, and theft of public funds.

The EFCC confirmed the development in a statement by spokesperson Dele Oyewale on Wednesday, urging the public to provide information on their whereabouts through any of its zonal offices.

The move is linked to a wider probe into alleged diversions of billions of naira earmarked for Abia’s 17 local government councils between 2019 and 2023. Last December, a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja directed the EFCC to investigate the allocations, also ordering the seizure of international passports of Enweremadu and other senior officials connected to the case.

The Commission has not disclosed the specific sums or transactions directly tied to Enweremadu, but the case underscores growing scrutiny over state-level management of federal allocations.
