Educators Applaud Nigeria’s Revised School Curriculum, Stress Need For Proper Implementation

The Nigerian government’s decision to roll out a new curriculum for basic, senior secondary, and technical education has drawn praise from education leaders who say it addresses long-standing gaps in the system.

Prof. Bilkis Lafiaji-Okunneye, Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education, said the reform’s focus on technology, digital literacy, and creativity would provide students with practical skills and help tackle unemployment. She also stressed the importance of discipline, noting that LASUED now requires prospective students to undergo drug tests.

Prof. Amidu Sanni, Chief Imam of Lagos State University, described the new policy as “laudable,” but urged policymakers to ensure effective implementation so graduates are better prepared for the workforce.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the new curriculum, designed to make learners “future-ready,” will take effect in the 2025/2026 school year.
