The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the death of one of its officers, Sergeant Aminu Yusuf, who was fatally shot by gunmen while escorting an expatriate client in Benin City.
In a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, it was revealed that the officer came under attack on 16 July along First East Circular Road, shortly after the expatriate had completed a bank transaction.
Yamu disclosed that two suspects linked to the assault have been apprehended, while a manhunt is ongoing to capture the remaining perpetrators.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the officer was ambushed by four armed men who opened fire on his team, killing him and fleeing the scene with his AK-47 service rifle.
The injured officer was immediately rushed to a medical facility, where he was later pronounced dead.
Law enforcement agencies have since intensified security operations in the area to track down the other suspects and recover the stolen firearm.
The attack has raised renewed concerns about security for escort personnel and foreign nationals operating in volatile regions of Nigeria.
