DHQ Moves To Establish Armed Forces Museum

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Empower 54 Africa Initiative to establish a world-class Armed Forces Museum in Abuja.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, said the project was conceived to preserve the history of the Nigerian military and honour the sacrifices of fallen heroes.

Musa said museums were vital custodians of national memory, adding that the Armed Forces Museum would be “elaborate, befitting and representative of Nigeria’s military heritage,” while meeting international standards.

“We want a museum that restores Nigeria to global standard, serves as a pride to our service members and families, and ensures that the sacrifices of our heroes are never forgotten,” he said.

Rear Adm. Olusanya Bankole, Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, said a seven-phase strategic plan had been designed for the project, with a formal launch projected for the first quarter of 2026.

He said Empower 54 was chosen as strategic partner after due diligence, adding that the project would cover 10 hectares of land and create jobs for veterans and civilians, while also generating revenue through tourism, education, and partnerships.

Princess Modupe Ozolua, President of Empower 54, said the vision for the museum was inspired by experiences in the North East during the peak of insurgency in 2014.

Ozolua said she witnessed first-hand the sacrifices of soldiers and devastation of communities in the region.

She said it was important to preserve the stories of gallant troops and the impact of their service, stressing that the museum would provide future generations with a living record of Nigeria’s military history.

The museum, to be known as the Armed Forces Museum, will also feature digital and interactive platforms to connect families with the memories of loved ones who paid the supreme price.
