Defence Ministry Mourns Late President Buhari, Praises His Enduring Legacy Of Patriotism

The Nigerian Ministry of Defence has joined the nation in mourning the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at the age of 82.

In a condolence message shared on Monday in Abuja, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, described Buhari as a distinguished leader whose life was defined by service, integrity, and deep patriotism.

“From serving as Military Head of State (1983–1985) to leading Nigeria as a democratically elected President (2015–2023), Buhari was a symbol of unity and national commitment,” Matawalle said. “His belief in an indivisible Nigeria inspired many, and he will be remembered as a leader who always prioritised the nation’s interests over personal gain.”

The minister offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Buhari’s soul, asking Allah to grant him Aljanatul Firdaus.

Buhari’s death has prompted tributes from across Nigeria and the international community, reflecting on his significant contributions to governance, national security and democratic development.
