Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his position with immediate effect.
In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Badaru said he was stepping down on health grounds.
A statement by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Badaru’s service to the nation.
The President is expected to communicate the name of Badaru’s successor to the Senate later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as governor of Jigawa State for two terms between 2015 and 2023. He joined the federal cabinet on August 21, 2023, following his appointment as Minister of Defence by President Tinubu.
His resignation comes as President Tinubu recently declared a national security emergency, with further details on the framework expected to be announced soon.
