More than 3.5 million Nigerians have taken part in the early phase of voter registration as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Figures released by INEC on Monday show that 3,544,850 citizens pre-registered online within three weeks, with young Nigerians between 18 and 34 years accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total. Students made up almost one in four registrants.
The Commission said 288,614 people have also completed physical registration across the country, which began on 25 August.
INEC’s National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, praised civic groups for mobilising participation but warned against attempts to register underage citizens. “It is illegal for anyone to encourage underage registration,” he said, stressing that only those already 18 are eligible.
The data, broken down by state, gender, age, occupation and disability, has been published on INEC’s official website.
