Cross River’s Igbo Community Vows Political Reawakening Ahead Of Nigeria’s 2027 Polls

The Cross River chapter of the Ọhanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has declared a renewed commitment to engage actively in Nigeria’s political landscape, starting with the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made on Sunday during a pivotal meeting in Ikom, where new executives were elected to lead the group for the next four years. The newly elected President, Chief Chukwuemeka Egwuonwu, declared the era of political detachment over for the state’s Igbo community.

“This is not the time for armchair politics,” Egwuonwu said in his inaugural speech. “We will no longer stand by as spectators while others determine our fate. Come 2027, Ọhanaeze Ndigbo in Cross River will be a key player in shaping the political direction of this country.”

Egwuonwu, a respected community leader, pledged a leadership style driven by inclusion, collaboration, and progress. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a working relationship with government authorities for the collective good of the Igbo community.

Governor Bassey Otu, in a message delivered by his adviser on non-indigene affairs, Chief Okey Maduekwe, commended the peaceful electoral process. He reiterated his government’s inclusive philosophy, stating that all ethnic groups in the state are given equal opportunities under his “people-first” agenda.

“The Igbos have continued to demonstrate loyalty and commitment to our state, and we will keep creating an environment where their businesses and families can flourish,” the governor said.

The election was conducted through a delegate voting system drawn from the 15 Ọhanaeze branches across the state’s 18 council areas. Prior to the vote, the Ezeigbo of Cross River, Emmanuel Ezenwenyi—represented by Chief Livinus Ihezie—urged delegates to ensure the poll remained fair and peaceful.

He also called on members to support the new leadership in carrying the weight of community responsibilities and fostering unity.

The Ọhanaeze Ndigbo is the apex socio-cultural organisation of the Igbo people, and the Cross River chapter’s latest resolve signals a significant shift towards more proactive political involvement by the group in Nigeria’s future.
