A severe windstorm has caused widespread destruction in Njegbeje Village, Ogoja Local Government Area, leaving more than 50 homes in ruins and displacing numerous residents.
The storm struck on Sunday night, tearing through the community just ahead of a violent downpour. It caused significant structural damage and wiped out farmlands, economic trees, and personal belongings.
Local government chairman Chief Christopher Agbeh, who visited the village to assess the situation, described the event as a “natural disaster of monumental proportions.”
“This is no ordinary storm. The impact is staggering — the damage runs into billions of naira. Immediate relief efforts are critical,” Agbeh told reporters. “We are appealing to both the Cross River State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria for urgent assistance.”
Residents described the storm’s ferocity as unprecedented. Village Head Chief Matthew Egbor said, “This is the worst disaster in our history. Entire households have been wiped out. Our people are now living under makeshift shelters without food or medical care.”
Egbor urged non-governmental organisations and government relief agencies to intervene promptly, citing growing concerns about hunger and disease due to exposure and lack of basic resources.
Both officials stressed the immediate need for emergency food supplies, temporary housing, and health support to prevent further suffering in the already vulnerable rural community.
