C’River: TUC Vows To Resist Imposition Of Candidates

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Cross River, says it will resist any attempt to impose candidates on it during its delegate conference in the state.
The Chairman, Mr Monday Ogbodum told newsmen in Calabar on Wednesday that only the State Executive Council was empowered by the constitution to conduct the union’s activities.
“There is no caretaker committee in the state. Our delegate conference initially scheduled for Nov. 18, 2025, was suspended due to noticed irregularities.
“At the state executive council, we reached a consensus on elective positions following the conference guidelines given by the national secretariat,” he said.
Ogbodum said that the consensus helped to strick a balance in the representation formula between public and private sector unions.
“A few days to the election, nomination forms were issued outside approved timelines, and an unsigned list was produced to impose candidates on the state chapter.
“These irregularities led to the suspension of the delegate conference by the national secretariat, and the conference was rescheduled to Feb. 5,” he said.
The chairman further said that issues arising from the suspended convention were pending at the National Industrial Court.
He stated that it would be highly unlawful to hold any delegate conference during the pendency of the matter in court.
The chairman urged the aggrieved members who took the matter to court to honour the consensus reached by the state executive council by withdrawing the matter from court.
Ogbodum said that an independent committee could be constituted to resolve the dispute in order to prevent further crisis.
