Correctional Service, Yakubu Gowon University Explore Partnership On Inmate Rehabilitation

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service is seeking collaboration with Yakubu Gowon University to enhance the rehabilitation of inmates through skills acquisition and education.

Controller of Correctional Service, Mr Christopher Jen, said during a courtesy call on Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Matthew, that the goal was to keep inmates productively engaged and prepare them for reintegration after release.

He noted that extending the university’s Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes to custodial centres would give inmates access to quality education, complementing vocational training.

Professor Matthew welcomed the proposal, describing corrections as a vital pillar of social stability. He pledged to set up an ODL centre at Kuje Custodial Centre and to sensitise students and staff against stigmatising ex-inmates.

The meeting underscored the importance of partnerships between correctional services and academic institutions in advancing rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
